Hey, I’m Michel van Heest, a Product & UX Design student from Middelharnis, The Netherlands.
By day I’m a design student at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, learning about User Experience and Interaction Design.
At university, I’m also teaching other students how to design with Sketch in a 10-week course focusing on real projects and practical workflows.
By night I’m just a guy trying to help others by building his own sideprojects like Shortcuts.design, learning how to make good products along the way. I’m also fascinated by productivity and self-development theories like the ones from David Allen and Stephen Covey.
In my spare time, I enjoy discovering new craftbeers with friends at festivals and started brewing my own beer with my dad (it's not that good yet).
I do all the non-university related stuff in the small Dutch “Middelharnis”-village on the island down there. It’s fairly quiet here, focus-mode 100%!
— Branden Kowitz, Design Disruptors
Since I started out in design, I’ve always been thinking about who I want to be as a designer. Because of my love for design, goals and productivity I became really interested in building mindful products like TimeWellSpent.io / Humane Tech is talking about.
Reading a lot about this made me realise that I have a huge responsibility; by learning about persuasive techniques and designing polished experiences I’ll probably be able to influence decisions people make, keep them on platforms buying things they don’t need or waste time they don’t have.
I learned that I most enjoyed helping or teaching other people things that made them a better version of themselves. It made me feel satisfied to know I made a real difference in the life of others by simply doing what I love the most.
My mission is to use my skills and passion for design and management to build products for others that enable them to become a better version of themselves by becoming more productive, better educated, healthier or better connected with others in a more meaningful way.
